UK Government Simplifies the UKCA Marking Process

The UK government has made an effort to simplify the country’s UK Conformity Assessed (UKCA) conformity markings. The new measures are designed to reduce the compliance burdens and duplication, and make it easier for companies to export goods to England, Wales, and Scotland.

The UKCA marking is a new UK product marking that came into effect on January 1, 2021, and will completely replace the CE marking by January 1, 2023. The product marking was implemented as a result of the UK leaving the European Union (EU) and it uses the same principle as the CE marking.

The new measures are designed to make it easier for businesses to apply for safety marking. The changes include:

1. It will not be required to re-test existing imported stocks.

CE marked products that are imported to the UK by 2022 can be sold in the UK without the need to be retested or re-certified. All conformity assessment activities undertaken by EU bodies in 2022 will be considered as the basis for the subsequent UKCA marking certification.

2. Spare parts of imported and compliant goods will be accepted in the UK market.

The UK will continue to accept spare parts to the market as long as they comply with the same requirements put in place at the time of the original system or product and the usage is adequately documented.

3. The labeling measures will be extended to sticky labels or accompanying documents

The updated legislation will allow important information and other relevant UKCA markings to be added to products using a sticky label or an accompanying document.
