The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) announced on 17 January 2023 that nine new substances have been added to the REACH Candidate List of Substance of Very High Concern (SVHC) under the REACH regulation (EC) 1907/2006. These substances have been identified as hazardous and pose a risk to human health and the environment.
REACH Candidate List to Contain 233 Substances
The REACH Candidate List, maintained by ECHA, comprises of substances that have been identified as SVHCs. The latest additions bring the total number of substances on the list from 224 to 233. Companies that manufacture, supply, or import products containing these substances have legal obligations under the REACH regulation.
REACH SVHC Regulations
Under the REACH regulation, suppliers of articles containing more than 0.1% of an SVHC must provide information on safe usage to consumers and customers. Producers and importers of articles must notify ECHA if their product contains a substance from the SVHC Candidate List within six months of its inclusion on the list. Additionally, suppliers of SVHCs must provide a safety data sheet to their customers.
Companies are also required to notify ECHA if their article contains more than 0.1% (weight by weight) of an SVHC or if the total amount of the SVHC exceeds 1 ton per year. These measures aim to ensure that the risks associated with these chemicals are managed, and that appropriate information is provided to users of the substances.
