The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has taken steps to improve safety standards for children’s products containing button cell or coin batteries. On February 9, 2023, the CPSC issued a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPR) to reduce the risk of children aged six years and younger accidentally ingesting these batteries.
Button cell or coin batteries are commonly used in children’s products, such as remote controls, watches, hearing aids, musical greetings cards and more. However, the use of these small batteries can pose a significant risk to small children, who may accidentally swallow them.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC or Commission) has proposed a rule to set performance requirements for battery compartments on consumer products that contain button cell or coin batteries. The proposal includes warning labels on the packaging, battery compartments and instructions manuals. Any consumer products falling under its jurisdiction will need to be tested and certified as meeting the rule’s requirements should the rule be finalised.
