The Canadian General Standards Board (CGSB) has recently reviewed and updated the CAN/CGSB-4.2 No. 27.5-2008 standard, which determines the flame spread properties of textile materials under Canada’s Textile Flammability Regulations.
The updated standard aims to provide more explicit guidelines for testing the flame spread properties of textile materials and improve the safety of these materials for consumers.
Updates to the CAN/CGSB-4.2 No. 27.5-2008 Standard
During the review, it was concluded that the method referenced in the Federal Regulations for Health Canada under SOR//2016-194 for Flammability required updating. The amended version of the standard includes several key updates, including:
- The revision of definitions.
- The incorporation of dry cleaning details cited from Method CAN/CGSB-4.2 NO. 30.3 -1994.
- Adding Annex B, which outlines voluntary burn codes.
- Adding Annex C clarifies the testing steps for the presence of flame retardants.
Apart from these, the washing and drying parameters were also updated, among other changes.
No Impact on Canada’s Textile Flammability Regulations (SOR/2016-194)
It is important to note that while the standard has been updated, the flammability requirements for testing under the Textile Flammability Regulations (SOR/2016-194) have not been amended.
Manufacturers and importers of textile materials in Canada must ensure they comply with the updated standards.
